This resource includes a step-by-step lesson and worksheets on percentages and calculating discounts on goods.

Lesson Goal:

★To show what a percentage looks like by representing percentages using a model.

★To teach students how to represent a percent as a fraction.

★To explore the use of percentages on sale goods used in the marketplace.

 Activity 1:
Use worksheet 1 either displayed on the IWB or print out and use with highlighter. Demonstrate what 50% looks like using the model.

☆Talk about how that can be represented as a fraction. Have students think of lots of equivalent fractions that are 50% so they understand there is an infinite number.

☆Touch on decimals so they can see the link.

Activity 2:
☆Hand out the Model Worksheet for students to complete. Note, answers will vary but we have provided an answer sheet.

☆Extension: Touch on decimals. Use a calculator and have them do the fractions…e.g. divide 25 by 100, divide 3 by 12, divide 1 by 4 and note that the answer is the same – 0.25

 Activity 3:
☆Give each student 20 counters. Ask them to take out 10%, 20%, etc.

☆Give students the Percent Worksheet to work through.

Activity 4:
☆Grab a bargain. Using the store brochures and worksheet provided, have students cut and paste in the items from the brochure. They need to work out the totals of the items before applying the savings and then what they cost after the discount. What have they saved?

☆Alternatively, we have provided a worksheet with items.

We used this as additional practice during our unit on percentages as my son was having a bit of trouble grasping the concepts. It was well done, and helpful for him.
